Fly Fishing Tackle

Freshwater fly rods are generally small, lightweight, and flexible. The typical rod for fly fishing in freshwater will be about two or three metres in length and geared toward catching salmon, trout and greyling.

Slightly larger rods may be purchased for bagging salmon or seatrout and these will be used with slightly stronger fishing line. Because much of the manipulation of the line in fly fishing is done manually, fly reels are generally simple, single-action devices.

Fly fishermen are usually experts in stripping the line off the reel with their left hand while handling the rod with their right and rarely need the reel to do anything fancier than simply store the extra fishing line for them.

Choosing Fly Fishing Line

Choosing the right fly fishing line for the right situation is an important part of the hobby of fly fishing. Different lines work better under different conditions, and using the best option will increase your performance.

The weight of the line you'll be using depends on a few things. First, be sure to match your line with your rod (a five weight reel and rod should be used with a five weight line, etc.).

Some manufacturers claim that you can go either one weight above or below your rod's recommendation, but you'll get better performance by matching them exactly. Weight five to six is the average weight, and best for most fishing.

Fly Fishing - A Fascinating Hobby

Fly fishing is one of the most popular and exciting ways to fish. With many different facets to the sport, more and more people are taking up the sport.

It can be done in either fresh or salt water and can be used to catch a variety of species. Rainbow trout, brown trout, salmon and grayling are the most popular UK fly fishing species, but other fesh and saltwater fish are also caught on the fly.

When fly fishing, artificial flies are cast using a rod of varying flexibility. In bait or spin fishing the weight of a sinker or lure determines the casting distance.

Conversely, when fly fishing the weight of the line carries the lure through the air as the fisherman uses different casting methods to replicate the actions of live insects.
